The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) on Monday said the number killed in an assault by Boko Haram militants on the town of Baga last week was no more than 150.
Residents however gave a much higher figure of 2000.
Defence authorities also assured that they not given up on the town located in the northeast state of Borno.
A series of messages posted on Twitter also assured that necessary actions are being taken to put an end to the activities of the terrorists and restore law and order to the community.
