Court

For allegedly snatching a handbag containing items worth N240,000, two young men were on Monday brought before an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The accused , Kareem Ibrahim, 22, and Olarinde Bukumi, 19 , are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and theft.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Duro Adekunle told the court that the accused committed the offences on September 30 at 2.30 a.m. at AnuOluwapo Community in Osogbo, the Osun capital.

Adekunle alleged that the duo conspired with others still at large to steal a handbag belonging to a woman, Adeleke Taiwo.

According to him, the handbag contains cosmetics, gold necklace, driving licence, a voter’s card, wristwatch and phones, all valued at N240,000.

The offences contravened Sections 390(9) and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2003.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 383(1) provides a punishment of three years jail term for offenders.

Both, however, pleaded not guilty and their lawyer, Mr. Babatunde Akinwunmi, urged the court to grant them bail on liberal terms.

In her ruling, Magistrate Fatima Sodamade granted the accused bail in the sum of N250,000 each with one surety each.

She said the sureties must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction and also provide evidence of tax payment.

Further hearing has been adjourned until December 18
