For allegedly breaking into an apartment to steal, a 20-year-old unemployed man, Dare Samuel, was on Thursday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
Samuel, a resident of Meiran, Lagos, is being tried for conspiracy, burglary and stealing.
According to the Prosecutor, Insp. Clement Okuoimose, the accused committed the offences on Dec. 16 at Idowu Street, Meiran, Lagos.
He said that the accused and others, still at large, conspired to burgle the apartment of Mrs Taiwo Adeyi to steal items worth N187,000.
“The accused stole one jeans valued at N2,000, a wrist chain worth N2,000, a wristwatch worth N2,000, three polo shirts worth N6,000, two necklaces valued at N10,000, four pair of shoes worth N35,000, three different handsets worth N50,000.
“Others are a laptop worth N50,000 and cash of N30,000, all totalling N187,000,” he said.
Okuoimose said that when the complainant came home to pick an item she forgot, she saw a crowd in front of her apartment.
“The complainant, who came home to take the marriage letter she forgot, was told that the accused broke and entered her apartment and were given a hot chase.
“The accused was arrested, while his accomplice escaped.
“The stolen items were recovered,” he said.
The offences contravened Sections 287, 308 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Section 308(2) prescribes seven years jail term for burglary.
The accused pleaded innocence and was granted bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
The Magistrate, Mrs Y. O Ekogbulu, said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The case was adjourned until January 31 for a mention.
