Three people were feared dead in the early hours of Friday when a luxurious bus travelling from Abia State skidded off its track and plunged into a nearby waterway in Lagos.
The accident, which occurred around 3:23am at Owode Elede, around Mile 12, caused traffic to build up all the way to Ikorodu Town.
Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officials were still clearing backlog of traffic hours after the bus with registration number Anambra GDD 386 YE, belonging to GUO Transport Service Co LTD. was pulled out of the water.
There were 59 passengers on board, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
Twenty three people got injured and were treated on the spot by paramedics.
LASEMA’s spokesperson, Kehinde Adebayo, said that nine of the treated victims were taken to the Lagos State Trauma Centre at the Toll Gate for further treatment.
Three passengers, however, died on the spot. The victims include the bus conductor and two passengers whose identities were not immediately known.
Their bodies were recovered from the canal, LASEMA said.
General Manager of LASEMA, Adesina Tiamiyu, said a proper investigation would be conducted on the incident.
He however advised motorists to be safety conscious and avoid over-speeding while driving, especially during night journeys.
