Many footballers today are known for their extravagant and wild lifestyles with Nigerian stars, not an exception. But few others are still very modest and religious both on and off the pitch.
Here are four of such Nigerian footballers.
- Ogenyi Onazi
He might be brutal and tough on the pitch, but Super Eagles star, Ogenyi Onazi, has always proven to be a devout Christian. The Trabzonspor midfielder started his football at My People FC, a club owned by Synagogue Church of all Nations founder, Prophet TB Joshua, and reckons he would have ventured into gospel music had he not made it in the round leather game.
- Odion Ighalo
The Watford striker has never hidden his religious belief even when on display for his club. He aims at the heavens each time he scores and sends a chunk of his wages to charitable causes in Nigeria to help kids, schools and widows living below the poverty line.
- Vincent Enyeama
Super Eagles most capped player, Vincent Enyeama, was known for his outspokenness which usually landed him in hot waters with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) as well as his coaches. But the Lille goalkeeper still remains one of the country’s most modest players who prior to his retirement usually led the team’s prayer sessions before games.
- Brown Ideye
Olympiakos striker, Brown Ideye, is another devout Christian Nigerian footballer. The former West Brom star regularly takes to Twitter to say his prayers before and after games. He is also known for sharing inspirational quotes on the online messaging platform.
