4 Nigerian stars facing tough times in the Premier League

The Premier League is arguably the most followed club competition in the world due to its unrivalled excitement, glamour and suspense.

No wonder it is the preferred destination for some of the most promising and talented footballers all over the world.

Nigerian players just like their counterparts from the rest of the globe are not left out.

This season alone about 10 Nigerian players are currently plying their trade in the English topflight.

While he likes of Victor Moses, Alex Iwobi and Victor Anichebe are having an impressive season, same cannot be said about some others.

Here are four Nigerians having a season to forget in the Premier League.

  1. Mikel Obi

Mikel Obi is probably his country’s most decorated player in the history of the Premier League. Aside two major European titles, the 29-year-old has won the league twice with Chelsea. But the Super Eagles skipper has now found himself in the fringes of the team this term. Mikel is facing his biggest challenge yet in England since his move in 2006 having failed to start a single game under Antonio Conte.

  1. Odion Ighalo

Odion Ighalo stormed the Premier League with a bang for Watford last season scoring an impressive 15 goals. But the goals have suddenly dried up for the ex-Granada man who has only managed one goal this season.

“Yes, it’s true that Odion is not scoring goals now, but you remember last season he was one of the best scorers around,” national teammate, Brown Ideye, explained.

“He is a good player with good knowledge of the game and I believe he will soon bounce back and start getting the goals again.”

  1. Ahmed Musa

Ahmed Musa arrived the Premier League with so much expectation having been signed for a club record fee by Leicester City. The 24-year-old immediately announced himself with a brace in the pre-season defeat to Barcelona. After that encounter, Musa has found it difficult to break into Claudio Ranieri’s title winning Foxes team. Despite notching two goals against Crystal Palace and Tottenham, the Super Eagles deputy captain still finds himself playing second fiddle to the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Islam Slimani and Jamie Vardy.

  1. Isaac Success

Just like Musa, Isaac Success arrived Watford as the club’s record signing. The 20-year-old joined the Hornets after an impressive two years in the Spanish League with Granada. But Success has only been restricted to just six appearances thus far due to injury. However, in the little time he’s played, the youngster has shown his quality and even got on the score sheet against Bournemouth in October.
