Tyronne Ebuehi was relatively unknown to many Nigerians prior to his invitation for the 2017 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Algeria.
Despite his growing reputation in the Dutch Eredivisie, the 20-year-old was never previously scouted by any of the youth national teams.
However, the youngster has now become a household name after he sensationally turned down the opportunity to play for the Super Eagles.
Here are five facts you probably didn’t know about the young lad.
- He’s a right fullback
Ebuehi has established himself as the first choice right back at Dutch side, ADO Den Haag, the same club where Kenneth Omeruo got his breakthrough four years ago. The 20-year-old has made over 30 appearances for Den Haag since his promotion to the first team in 2014.
- Born in Holland
Ebuehi was born in Haarlem, capital of the province of North Holland in 1995. This automatically makes him eligible for the Dutch national team.
- Uncapped at any level by Netherlands
Despite his meteoric rise in the European nation, Ebuehi is yet to be capped at any level by the Netherlands. He is so many miles away from being considered for Oranje and hasn’t even been given a look by any of the youth teams.
- He scores goals too
One interesting aspect of Ebuehi’s game is his ability to nick a goal or two aside his defensive duties. The defender notched his only goal of the season in the season’s opener against Go Ahead Eagles in August.
- No specific strength
One reason Nigerians shouldn’t necessarily mourn Ebuehi’s decision is that the defender isn’t the complete package they clamour for. According to statistical website, whoscored.com, the 20-year-old has no specific strength and is awful at aerial duels, crossing and tackling.
