Nigerian footballers are undoubtedly Africa’s number 1 exports to Europe at the moment.
While few are struggling to find their feet in their respective clubs, others have been impressive – putting up superb performances that have spurred their teams to greater heights.
With another weekend of top footballing actions on the cards, we highlight five most in-form Nigerians you should keep an eye on.
- Victor Moses
Fixture: Crystal Palace vs. Chelsea
Venue: Selhurst Park
Kick-off: Saturday, 1:30pm
Player stats: Chelsea are unbeaten in their last 10 league games that Victor Moses has started.
The 27-year-old has contributed four goals in 15 appearances in the league this term.
Moses will be making a sensational return to Palace – the club he played for between 2007 and 2010 – making 58 appearances and scoring 11 goals.
- Alex Iwobi
Fixture: Manchester City vs. Arsenal
Venue: Etihad Stadium
Kick-off: Sunday, 5pm
Player stats: Alex Iwobi has made 20 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions this season.
The 20-year-old has scored twice in his last three games for the Gunners.
He comes up against his friend and roommate at the national team level, Kelechi Iheanacho, this weekend.
- Olarenwaju Kayode
Fixture: Austria Wien vs. Mattersburg
Venue: Ernst-Happel-Stadion
Kick-off: Saturday, 7:30pm
Player stats: Olarenwaju Kayode is the third leading goalscorer in Austria with seven goals and four assists for Austria Wien.
Kayode has a poor disciplinary record this season with five yellow cards.
Despite his superb form in Europe which has seen him notch nine goals in all competitions, the former youth international is yet to be capped at senior level.
- Brown Ideye
Fixture: Olympiacos vs. Panaitolikos
Venue: Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium Piraeus
Kick-off: Sunday, 2pm
Player stats: Brown Ideye is currently Nigeria’s leading goalscorer in Europe with nine goals and four assists.
The Olympiacos forward is also the leading marksman in Greece and has been responsible for about half of the goals scored by his team.
Ideye will be hoping to improve his form lately having scored just twice in his last five games.
- Anthony Nwakaeme
Fixture: Hapoel Ra’anana vs. Hapoel Be’er Sheva
Venue: Turner Stadium, Beersheba
Kick-off: Sunday, 8pm
Player stats: With eight goals and three assists, Anthony Nwakaeme is the highest goalscorer in the Israeli Premier League.
The club is top of the league and unbeaten in their last six games with the Nigerian on target on four occasions.
Nwakaeme at 27 is yet to be capped by Nigeria but his teammate, John Ogu, is a regular with the Super Eagles.
