The Governing Council of Federal University, Gashua (FUGashua) in Yobe State on Saturday approved the appointment of Professor Maimuna Waziri as vice-chancellor of the institution.
She will succeed Professor Andrew Haruna whose tenure ends on February 10.
Below are five things we know about the incoming vice-chancellor.
1. From Yobe
Prof Waziri is an indigene of Yobe state. She is 55 years old.
2. First female VC
She is the first female appointed VC of the university since its establishment by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2013. Incumbent VC Prof Haruna took over from pioneer VC Prof Shehu Abdul Rahman in 2016.
3. Beat 47 other professors
Waziri was one of the 48 professors that applied to be VC, out of which 25 were shortlisted for interaction. Three candidates made it to the final stage before the university’s governing council settled on Waziri.
4. Professor of chemistry
Waziri is a professor of analytical chemistry with over 30 research works to her credit. She was previously dean of faculty of science and currently deputy vice-chancellor (admin) of FUGashua.
5. Member of OWSD
Waziri is a member of the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD)which provides research training, career development and networking opportunities for women scientists throughout the developing world at different stages in their careers.
