Plateau United etched their name in history books after claiming the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title for the first time.
A comfortable 2-0 victory over Enugu Rangers at the Rwam Pam Stadium on Saturday ensured the Jos-based side joined the elite company of champions.
But as impressive as they may seem, none of their players finished among the division’s finest marksmen.
The club’s top scorers, Kabiru Umar and Golbe Elisha, managed a measly 11 goals combined.
Below are the five highest goal scorers from the just concluded NPFL season.
- Anthony Okpotu – Lobi Stars
With MFM FC’s Stephen Odey out of the picture, Anthony Okpotu pounced to take home the top scorer’s accolade. Okpotu’s strike against FC IfeanyiUbah in the final fixture ensured he moved one goal above the 19-year-old.
- Stephen Odey – MFM FC
Stephen Odey led the goalscoring chart for the most part of the season. Despite, ditching the Prayer Warriors for Swiss club, FC Zurich, the youngster still garnered a respectable 18 strikes.
- Kingsley Eduwo – Lobi Stars
Lobi Stars may have finished the season in mid-table; nonetheless, the club holds the bragging right for producing two out of the three league’s top scorers. One of them is Kingsley Eduwo who hit the back of the net 14 times for the Makurdi-based outfit.
- Sunday Adetunji – Abia Warriors
Sunday Adetunji is part of the reason Abia Warriors successfully dodged the drop. The ex-Shooting Stars man notched 13 out of the 44 goals scored by his team. Put in perspective, he was responsible for almost one-quarter of his team’s strikes.
- Adamu Hassan – Nasarawa United
Tied alongside Adetunji with 13 goals was Adamu Hassan of Nasarawa United. Compared to the Abia Warriors forward, then Hassan’s strikes were more important to his side who concluded the campaign in fifth.
