Nigerians have reacted with fear over the looming strike which the leadership of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) says it would embark on if its requests are not met by the Federal Government.
ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, had on Thursday faulted the minister of education, Adamu Adamu, over his comment that the sum of N25 billion had been approved by the Federal Government for university lecturers as earned academic allowance (EAA).
Adamu had on Tuesday during his valedictory press briefing made the announcement.
Ogunyemi said the minister was not sincere about the alleged approval which ASUU has been seeking since February.
He warned that for failing to abide by the agreement it reached with the Union before the strike was suspended in February, the Federal Government should be blamed for any further disruption of the university system.
“It is frustrating because we have visited the Ministry of education at least three times and written letters to the Ministry since we signed the MOA in February 2019, all to no avail. This is a complete breach of trust on the part of the government,” he said.
Nigerians have now expressed their fears on another looming strike after the last one shut down public universities for over two months.
