President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Ahmad Ahmad, has been released by French anti-corruption officials without charge.
Mr Ahmad was freed on Thursday evening after being detained in Paris by the central office for the fight against corruption and financial and fiscal offences (OCLIF).
The 58-year-old was in France to attend the 69th FIFA Congress which ended on Wednesday.
Prosecutor Xavier Tarabeux said Ahmad was questioned as part of a probe into corruption, breach of trust and forgery.
Ahmad’s arrest was said to be connected with a “contract unilaterally broken by CAF with the German equipment manufacturer Puma to engage with the company Technical Steel, based in La Seyne-sur-Mer.”
Ahmad allegedly signed off on a deal, which benefitted the company, Technical Steel, with one of the company’s bosses said to have paid a total of €739 000 him in order to get the deal sanctioned.
