Singer AGY jailed two years for abusing Ganduje

A court in Kano State has sentenced singer, Mohammed Yusuf, popularly known as AGY, to two years in jail for singing a song abusing Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

According to the magistrate court, AGY is guilty of three offences, namely singing without permission from Kano censors board, shooting video without permission and abusing Governor Ganduje.

The lyrics of the song described the governor as liking money more than a thief.

The video shows only back and side views of the singer, making it difficult to immediately determine who the singer was.

For the first two offences for which AGY was sentenced to serve one year in jail, he has an option to pay N100,000 fine but the abuse of Ganduje carries a jail term of one year jail time without an option of fine.

AGY was arrested on Tuesday days after the police had wrongfully arrested another musician, Sanusi Abdullahi, better known as SK, thinking he was the one that sang the song.

Qed.ng recalls that a court in Kano State remanded singer, Sadiq Zazzabi, in prison in 2017 over a song titled ‘Maza Bayan Ka’ he released in honour of former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Zazzabi was arraigned before the censorship court for allegedly violating the state’s censorship board law which requires that songs or movies should pass censorship screening before release.

The musician was later granted bail in the sum of N100,000, with two sureties one of whom must be a member of the music writers association of Kano State, and the other a civil servant of not lower than grade level 14.
