Actress, model and producer, Mercy Ebosele, has something to say about her background, tattoos and new movie. The fifth of eight children (six girls and two boys), the Edo born beauty tells Bisola Bello about her rise up the Nollywood ladder.
You are from Edo state but you also go by the name Ajoke. Can you clarify that?
I was born in Oyo State and the name Ajoke came from someone really close to me. My family and I just really like the name. Not to forget that Edo and Yoruba bear similar names like Bose, Aduke and Toyin. More so I am not the only one with a Yoruba name in my family. My elder sister is Dupe.
When did your acting career begin?
I started acting in 2003. I was under Muyiwa Ademola Acting Group but then I could not get movie roles because they said I had a small stature. I tried the best I could to uplift myself by producing my own movie. I started with Anike.
Which movie role has been the most challenging for you?
I cannot really say any of the roles I have portrayed has been challenging. The thing is when I get a script I always try my best to interpret it the best way I can by putting myself into the character. I just think of it as a real situation because the truth is acting is make believe.
Was there a period you felt compelled to stop acting or you felt you wouldn’t make it?
Yes, there was a period I stopped for six months because it was not easy then for some personal reasons. But to God be the glory, I am still here.
What is your opinion about tattoos?
I am not against tattoos. The fact that I do not have it does not mean I think it is bad. Everyone is entitled to their way of life. My thinking is totally different from others.
How do you feel about the rumour that most female actresses sell themselves to become famous?
I always feel bad when I hear this because it is not true. What will be will surely be. If you like sell yourself or do anything ungodly just to be famous, if the movie industry is not your way there is nothing you can possibly do that will change that destiny.
What is the inspiration behind the movie Ibusun?
I wrote Ibusun because I wanted to do something different from what I have been doing. Away from the modern girl role, I wanted to redefine myself and thankfully it was a success.
How do you respond to advances from male fans?
I appreciate them as my fans and I try not to get too attached.
Are you currently in a relationship?
I do not talk about my relationship; I like to keep my relationship private.
Who would you like to work with that you haven’t?
While the list is endless. I would really love to work with Genevieve Nnaji.
What is next for Mercy Ebosele?
My new production, Adufe, is scheduled to be out by October. It features Khabirat Kafadipe, Peju Omobolanle, Peter Fatomilola and more. Just wait and see. It is going to be great.
