Vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 2019 election, Peter Obi, has appreciated Prof. Ben Nwabueze for showing up in court on Thursday.
Nwabueze, a former minister of education and youth development, announced himself before the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja as the leader of the petitioners’ legal team.
The 87-year-old appeared at the tribunal on a wheelchair and read a speech before the commencement of proceedings.
The senior lawyer took his leave about 30 minutes later.
Nwabueze said his appearance was to underscore the importance of the case for the nation’s democratic development.
Mr Obi posted a picture of himself on Twitter pushing the wheelchair of the senior lawyer.
The former Anambra State governor said Nwabueze’s presence in court was ‘reassuring’ despite his age and health challenges.
“It was reassuring that notwithstanding his age and health challenges, Prof Ben Nwabueze (SAN), patriot and foremost constitutional lawyer, led our legal team at the commencement of trial at the Presidential Election Petition, today,” Obi said.
