Police in Lagos have charged a security guard, Micheal Nwaogwu, for allegedly stealing N2, 385 from a church’s offering box.
Nwaogwu, 20, was arraigned on one count of theft on Friday in a Yaba Magistrates’ Court.
The guard, a resident of Costain area of Lagos, denied the charges.
The court heard that the defendant allegedly committed the offence at midnight on July 17 at Saint Dennis Catholic Church, Akoka Bariga, Lagos.
Police prosecutor, Godwin Oriabure, alleged that another security guard, Musa Ayay, discovered that the offering box was tampered with.
He said when Mr Ayay confronted the defendant, he confessed to the crime.
Ayay alleged that the money was recovered from the defendant’s underwear.
The prosecutor said the alleged offence contravened the provisions of Section 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015 (Revised).
Magistrate Oluwatoyin Ojuromi admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N30, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
Ojuromi ordered that one of the sureties must be a blood relation.
The case was adjourned until August 19 for mention.
