One person said to be a motorcyclist has been confirmed dead in a fuel tanker explosion on Wednesday in Tunfure along Gombe-Bauchi highway.
Several shops were also razed in the early morning fire.
An official of the Red Cross Society, Abass Mohammed, said the tanker was travelling from Gombe to Bauchi State when the incident occurred.
“The tanker, which was loaded with fuel, was coming out. There was a container on its way, it made an attempt to drive past the container, oblivious of a stationary trailer ahead.
“The tanker driver collided with the container, erupted in fire, and caused the death of a motorcycle operator, while five shops were razed,” he said.
It is not known if the driver of the tanker survived the incident.
Firemen joined by natives have put out the fire.
