Armed security operatives have fired gunshots and teargas at RevolutionNow protesters gathered in front of the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.
Protesters began converging at the stadium as early as 7 am on Monday.
The protesters met a team of security agents known as Operation MESA or OP MESA made up of the Army, the Navy and the Air Force. They were also joined by police officers.
Shots were fired when the protesters started calling for the release of the convener of RevolutionNow movement, Omoyele Sowore.
Mr Sowore, a former presidential candidate, was arrested by the Department of State Security (DSS) on Saturday, two days before the commencement of the RevolutionNow protests.
Organisers of the protest had earlier assured that the protest would continue nationwide despite Sowore’s arrest.
