President Muhammadu Buhari has said that he is not indifferent to the killing of three policemen by soldiers in Taraba State.
Police had said last Wednesday that the officers from the Intelligence Response Team who were taking a kidnap kingpin, Alhaji Hamisu Wadume, to the command headquarters in Jalingo were attacked by soldiers.
They said the police officers were shot dead while the suspect was set free, but the army countered the claim, saying the policemen were mistaken for kidnappers.
Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, in several tweets on Monday said Buhari was not indifferent to the killings.
He described insinuations of indifference on the part of President Buhari as untenable, adding that Buhari had ordered the Chief of Defence Staff to set up an investigation committee with representatives from all the security organisations in the country, including the police.
“The President is not indifferent to the unfortunate incident, and would take decisive action as soon as the report of the panel is submitted to him. He is following due process and procedure. Putting the cart before the horse is not President Buhari’s way of doing things,” Mr Shehu said.
The spokesman advised that Nigerians should be patient while the President awaits the panel’s report.
