Taraba kidnap kingpin Hamisu Wadume

Police have re-arrested an alleged kidnap kingpin in Taraba State, Hamisu Wadume, days after a deadly clash by soldiers and policemen who were conveying the suspect.

Force spokesperson Frank Mba said on Tuesday that Wadume was re-arrested on the eve of August 19.

Mr Mba had said on August 7 that policemen from the Intelligence Response Team who were taking Wadume to the command headquarters in Jalingo were attacked by soldiers.

The police officers were shot dead while the suspect was set free. The army, however, said the policemen were mistaken for kidnappers.

Police posted a video of the suspect on Twitter where he spoke in Hausa, implicating soldiers at the Battalion 93, Takum, Taraba State, in his escape from the IRT custody.

“My name is Hamisu Bala Wadume,” he began, “Police came to arrest me, When they arrested me, army chased after them and opened fire.

“From there, they (soldiers) took me to their headquarters, and cut up my handcuffs. I went back to my house and police came to re-arrest me,” he said.

Police had called on the army to disclose the whereabouts of Wadume and state why it had interest in the arrest of the suspect.
