The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has renounced pictures circulating on social media purported to be its Port Harcourt Zonal Office Holding Cell.
In a statement on Tuesday by the commission’s acting spokesperson, Tony Orilade, EFCC said the pictures being circulated were mere attempts to smear its reputation.
The purported pictures show the facility as an open environment surrounded by razor-wired walls.
The agency, however, said the facility in its Port Harcourt office was decent and was being misrepresented.
“It is important to further clarify that EFCC detention centres are known for their remarkable care for detainees in line with our avowed respect for human right and dignity,” the statement said.
The anti-graft agency added that its Port Harcourt detention facility, like all others across the country, is further bolstered by a well-equipped medical centre that attends to the health needs of detainees, who are fed three square meals daily from the same canteen that services EFCC’s staff.
It also said it would investigate the brains behind the pictures and take any further needful action to prevent future occurrence.
“The Commission welcomes criticisms, so long as they are meaningful and constructive, but frowns at premeditated attempts to drag its hard-earned reputation and image to the mud,” it said.
