The United States’ Embassy in Abuja and Consulate in Lagos have cancelled routine nonimmigrant visa appointments indefinitely.

According to a statement on Wednesday on its website, also posted on social media, the move is a precaution to the spread of the coronavirus.

“As of March 18, 2020, the United States Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria is cancelling routine nonimmigrant visa appointments. We will resume routine visa services as soon as possible but are unable to provide a specific date at this time,” the statement read.

“The MRV fee is valid and may be used for a visa application in the country where it was purchased within one year of the date of payment…”

As of Wednesday, coronavirus cases in Nigeria jumped to eight after five persons tested positive to the virus.
