Nigerian reggae icon, Majek Fashek, is dead, his former backup singer, Monica Omorodion Swaida, has said.
Writing in a Facebook post on Tuesday morning (Nigerian time), Monica, who is based in the US said: “I have been getting phone calls and text messages. How news flies.
“It is true. I didn’t want to believe it, but it is true. The rain maker has disappeared! He said he won’t die, but will disappear. He has gone to be with the Lord.
“If you love him, say a prayer for the family. Rejoice and play his music.
“Majek Fashek the rainmaker has disappeared from humans! It is true! It is true. Singing now with the angels.”
The musician’s family has, however, not confirmed his passing.
Former Punch journalist, Azuka Jebose, posted on Facebook: “Family and Edo Union sources in New York say he died at 5pm in New York.
“Still waiting for Randy, his son, for official confirmation.
“Sad day.”
More to come…
