#EndSARS protesters have appeared divided over a feminist group’s support for the LGBTQ community as being part of the reasons for the protest which have spread to several parts of the country.
Some of the #EndSARS campaigners on Twitter voiced their concern on Sunday following a tweet by Feminist Coalition that the #EndSARS protest was also about police harassment of the LGBTQ.
The Feminist Coalition has been leading the campaign to raise funds and support victims of police brutality and undue harassment over the past two weeks. Their role received a terrific boost last week when Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey recognised the platform as the face of the movement, verified their Twitter accounts and amplified their fundraiser.
“Our communal fight to #EndSARS is inclusive of the LGBTQ+ community who are also harassed, assaulted and killed by police. They deserve the same justice we seek & even more so, as they are also a target of the law. You can’t be what you fight against,” the feminist group said in a now-deleted tweet.
The tweet did not sit well with several #EndSARS campaigners including activist Segun Awosanya alias Segalink who had pulled out of the campaign after claiming it had been hijacked for insurrection.
“Kindly call this what it is. This is NOT #EndSARS Movement but an LGBTQ+ and Feminist Movement. Stop impersonating & exploiting the vulnerability of Nigerians, who genuinely wants to end impunity. This agenda is dead on arrival. There is no place for insurrection in Nigeria!” Mr Awosanya tweeted.
