Sokoto State Government said it will not sack any teacher from the civil service, but will not fail to reassign any that does not have the requisite qualifications to be in the classroom.
Making this known while addressing the annual national congress of his alma mata, the Dogon Daji Old Boys Association (DOBA), Governor Aminu Tambuwal, said beginning from the next budget circle, government will ensure continuous training and retraining of teachers to update their knowledge and make them conform with modern teaching techniques.
He said huge sums of money have been budgeted for that purpose, but warned that any teacher who fails to make the grade thereafter, will be reassigned to other ministries and departments of government.
“Let me announce it here that we do not plan to retrench any teacher working with the state government. In fact, we need more quality teachers to address shortfall in numbers.
“What we will not condone in our schools is unqualified teachers who have nothing to offer our children. If after giving you the necessary training, we discovered you don’t have the capacity or enthusiasm to teach, we will reassign you to where your expertise if most needed,” Tambuwal stated.
While commending the executive committee of the association for its diligence in the face of mounting challenges, Tambuwal urged the members to support the government in its effort to take Sokoto to greater heights.
At the end of the congress, Alhaji Nasiru Idris was elected national President of the association with Abdullahi Muhammed elected as Secretary. Others elected were Dr. Bello Wamakko as Vice President and Ahmed Garba as Organising Secretary.
