Former military ruler Yakubu Gowon has discredited a statement made by a United Kingdom Member of Parliament Tom Tugendhat that he (Gowon) laundered half of public funds in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
“What the MP said was just mere ridicule and I don’t know as to where he cooked up such statement. I served Nigeria as much as I could and my achievements during those years are available to everyone,” Gowon told BBC News Pidgin on Wednesday.
He further said: “I don’t want to talk over the matter since those who know me very well say that the MP’s statement is nothing but a mere fallacy.”
The British MP had made the allegation on Monday during a debate over the #EndSARS protest against police brutality in Nigeria.
The debate was sequel to a petition signed by over 200,000 people.
Gowon ruled Nigeria from 1966 to 1975 before his government was overthrown while he was away from Nigeria.
He was directly flown to the UK and enrolled at Warwick University.
