American actor, Leonardo DiCaprio, on Sunday night struck gold as he bagged three awards including Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director (Alejandro González Iñárritu) for his new movie The Revenant at the 2016 Golden Globes Awards.
DiCaprio, who won the Best Actor – Drama award bested four other actors – Will Smith (Concussion), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs), Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl), and Bryan Cranston (Trumbo) – with his role as a fur trapper who claws his way across hundreds of miles in freezing weather to exact revenge on the man who left him for dead.
The 41-year-old received a standing ovation from the audience as he made his way to the stage to accept the award.
Giving his acceptance speech, Leo said, “Wow, that meant a lot, Two years ago we found ourselves submerged deep in nature with all of its complications and all of the beauty that it gave us cinematically. This film was about survival, about the triumph of the human spirit, but more than anything it was about trust.”
He thanked director Alejandro González Iñárritu and co-star, Tom Hardy, whom he called “a beast and an unbelievable talent who I know in real life would never bury me alive and leave me out to die like that”.
While Leonardo’s major victory of the night was getting more than one plaque, he also stole the show when he gave pop star, Lady Gaga, the side eye as she brushed into him on her way to accept the award for Best Actress in a Limited-Series, TV Movie.
Twitter users could not help but comment and create gifs to commemorate the moment.
