Real Madrid and Atletico have been given more time to sign new players, as both teams had their transfer bans suspended on Friday by FIFA’s Appeals Committee.
Los Blancos and Los Colchoneros were handed a one-year transfer ban earlier this month. If both teams had agreed to serve their sanctions, they wouldn’t have been able to add new players from February 2nd,2016 until July 1st, 2017. With their transfer bans suspended, both clubs will be able to sign more players after the current window closes.
Atletico revealed the news to their fans via their Twitter feed.
“FIFA’s Appeals Committee has granted us a suspension from the transfer ban imposed on the club while the matter is solved before the courts.”
Nevertheless, this is only a temporary measure, since both teams could have their transfer bans upheld by FIFA in the upcoming months, meaning that their penalty would have to be served later this year.
As of now, both teams will be able to revamp their squads this summer, but if the FIFA Ethics Committee decides to maintain the transfer ban on both teams before the start of the summer transfer window, Atletico and Real Madrid will have to appeal to the Court of Arbitrage in Sports in order to be able to sign more players before the start of the 2016-2017 season.
