Afro-fusion singer Burna Boy has sparked a debate on Twitter with the declaration that he does not make money from Nigeria.
The 29-year-old Grammy winner stated this on Tuesday in response to a fan who accused him of denying his motherland.
A fan had earlier tweeted “Burna boy go soon leave Twitter NG for una,” to which the singer joked “Me wey no even be Nigerian artist.”
That promoted someone else “But you dey promote African culture and you Dey deny your own motherland, all na showbiz as usual lmao.”
“Responding, Burna Boy tweeted “I’m from here and I live here because I love my home and my people, E no pass like that. I don’t make money from Nigeria. Na only cruise dey here.”
The singer also confirmed that he was not paid for the homecoming concert organised by the Rivers State Government in March to celebrate his Grammy victory.
“I didn’t get a dime. Only the artists who honoured me by performing at my homecoming were paid,” he said.
Burna’s statement echoed what his mother Bose Ogulu told Ebuka Obi-Uchendu in a recent interview that he was not paid for the concert.
Answering a question about the perception that the singer was fraternising with politicians whom he often criticises, Mrs. Ogulu said “money wasn’t paid, by the way. It was paid to everyone else but him (Burna).”
Governor Nyesom Wike promised all the home-based artistes that performed at the concert N10million each.
