Established in 2016, the Lagos Computerized Vehicle Inspection Service (LACVIS) has made giant strides and recorded remarkable results in improving the safety of road users.
It partners with the Vehicle Inspection Services (VIS) through computerised vehicle inspection services for the purpose of ascertaining the worthiness of vehicles on roads and for the issuance of road worthiness certificate.
LACVIS was set up by a strong desire to provide lasting solution to the historical antecedents of dangers posed by having vehicles that are not road worthy on Lagos State roads. LACVIS is regulated by the Lagos State Ministry of Transport to provide technical and operational infrastructure to inspect vehicles according to the statutory provisions of the law.
It works with other major stakeholders namely the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), police, road traffic unions, news media, and the general public.
Like the saying, “The rudder directs the ship”, a safe vehicle is synonymous with a safe road. The importance of testing automobiles cannot be overemphasized. LACVIS carries out a detailed evaluation of every component of the automobile, including the braking, suspension, steering, lighting, tires, chassis and others.
The LACVIS checks that the vehicle’s engine performance complies with the road safety standards. It prides itself in delivering optimised services, providing convenience and customer satisfaction. It boasts of technical experts with globally certified skills across fields on board to ensure the sustenance of quality practice and continuous development of its procedures.
The steps to getting one’s vehicle inspected include obtaining road worthiness certificate (RWC) from any of the VIS offices; proceeding to the nearest LACVIS centre with referral note attached to the RWC; getting your vehicle inspected at any of the LACVIS centres at no extra cost.
Some of the LACVIS centres are located at Gbagada, Ikeja, Lekki, Ikorodu, Ojota among others.
LACVIS had its fair share of looting, burning and vandalisation of three of its facilities namely Ojodu, Oko-Afo and Ibeju Lekki Test Centres during the destruction that followed the #EndSARS protest last year.
But with over one million vehicles inspected and 100 per cent customer satisfaction, the LACVIS aims to achieve accident-free roads.
In recognition of its services, the LACVIS has clinched several awards such as AFRISAFE awards, TLEA Awards, and international collaborations with CITA.
With about 20 inspection centers presently in Lagos, the LACVIS has a master plan of establishing 52 centres across the state.
It says it has hit over 50 per cent of the target goal since its establishment.
The organisation is managed by the managing director/chief executive officer Segun Obayendo to the general manager, audit head, finance manager, quality control manager, project manager, IT manager, admin manager, business development manager, and human resources and capacity manager.
