The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has called on petroleum tanker drivers to cancel their planned strike, saying it would make the festive season burdensome for the public.
The tanker drivers had threatened to embark on strike over the state of roads in the country.
In a statement issued on Saturday by NNPC spokesman Garba Muhammad, the company assured the drivers it has initiated a process that will provide quick and effective solution to the roads network challenges.
“Having recognised that the major reason slowing down the rehabilitation of the road networks in the country is the paucity of funds, the NNPC has expressed interest to invest in the reconstruction of select Federal roads under the Federal Government’s Road Infrastructure Development and Refurbishment Investment Task Credit Scheme.
“The thrust of the NNPC’s intervention is to make considerable funds available for the reconstruction of roads through it Future Tax Liability,” the statement read.
The NNPC urged the drivers to suspend plans to go on strike and to allow the government and its agencies solve the challenges.
It also advised members of the public not to engage in panic buying of petroleum products, adding that it has sufficient stock to last through the festive period and beyond.
