There was confusion on Tuesday, November 2 over the purported release of the socialite Obi Iyiegbu aka Obi Cubana from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Obi Cubana began answering questions at the Abuja headquarters of the EFCC on Monday, November 1 on allegations bordering on money laundering and tax evasion.
A post on his verified Instagram page on Tuesday, however, fuelled rumour that he had been released by the anti-graft agency.
The post came with a cryptic message and a picture of Obi Cubana smiling broadly.
“Okpataozueora! I love you ALL! Unbroken,” he wrote.
Celebrities such as Davido, Cubana Chief Priest, Paul Okoye, Flavor Na’bania, Nkechi Blessing, Iyabo Ojo, AY Makun, Zlatan Ibile, Phyno, Pretty Mike, Mr Jollof and Nosa Rex immediately commented on the post with support messages.
Obi Cubana’s colleague Instigator PH even claimed in an Instagram post that the Anambra-born social media influencer had left the headquarters of the anti-graft agency.
He wrote, “Thank u Jesus!! @obi_cubana is free. We gat Jesus!!! . Dis Dance is for all my fans. I love u all.”
In another post, he said, “Breakinh Newz. Obi Cubana is free. Confirmed by me, only 1 instigator. Give away loading.”
However, a source told PUNCH that Obi Cubana was still in EFCC custody and that his passport had been confiscated.
“Obi Cubana has not been released, he is still having quality sessions with investigators over alleged money laundering running into millions of naira and tax fraud.
“He will be released when he has satisfactorily responded to all questions relating to his involvement in various illegal deals. As part of investigation, his travel document has been temporarily seized pending the conclusion of investigations,” the source was quoted as saying.
EFCC spokesman Wilson Uwujaren confirmed that the entrepreneur is still in custody, but remained silent on the passport.
Obi Cubana made headlines in July when he hosted a lavish funeral for his mother in Oba, Anambra State.
