The management of Elizade University, Ilara Mokin, Ondo State has denied any wrongdoing in the death of a 300-level nursing student Temitayo Owodolu.
The deceased’s parents, Gbenga Owodolu and Oluwabukola Owodolu, had in a letter addressed to the school demanded N1 billion as damages, an apology and acceptance of negligence, immortalisation of their daughter among others, threatening to file charges if their demands were not met.
Owodolu, who was asthmatic, died at the institution’s medical centre on November 16, 2021. Her parents claimed that the facility’s negligence led to her death.
However, the varsity’s registrar Omololu Adegbenro in a statement expressed disappointment in the manner the incident was handled by the parties involved.
Adegbenro said the student developed complications around 3 am but visited the medical centre at about 5:20 am.
Describing the information about the incident already in the public space as malicious, the registrar maintained that the university sets great store on the value of the life of students entrusted in their care.
She said, “Temitayo’s vital signs were closely monitored at all times. But after initially responding positively to the treatment administered, her condition took a turn for the worse. The University’s medical personnel, again, medicated her as required and administered further emergency measures to relieve her condition, including a nebulizer and recommencement of intranasal oxygen.
“The University is deeply saddened that despite the best efforts of our medical personnel, Temitayo tragically passed away that morning.
“The University is deeply distressed by Social Media commentaries falsely representing the cause of Temitayo’s unfortunate demise and, further, claiming that her loss occurred as a result of a short-fall in the facilities available at our Medical Centre. The commentaries even go to the extent of stating that the tragic event of Tuesday morning occurred during a power blackout. This is far away from the truth.”
