Some parents whose children attend Dowen College in Lekki, Lagos have called for a change of management of the school following the death of one of the students Sylvester Oromoni.
The boy was allegedly brutalised by senior students for refusing to join a cult, according to his parents.
In a statement signed by four parents Aituaz Kola-Oladejo, Waheed Adeoye, Oluwaseun Ajila and Kingsley Agu, they also demanded a change of hostel teachers and installation of closed circuit television in the school.
They said they were “deeply saddened” by the incident, but “temporarily relieved by the swiftness with which the authorities intervened and commenced investigation.”
“We urge the school management team and other stakeholders to fully cooperate with the authority in the ongoing investigation,” they said.
The statement further read, “On our part as parents, we will work more closely with the school (management/board) to ensure that necessary measures are put in place to prevent recurrence of this unfortunate incident and stamp out bullying in any form from the school.”
They urged parents to show more interest in what their children do in school and for the public to see the incident as an “inflection point” which calls for a resolution that bullying, molestation and other vices should be rooted out of schools.
“We, therefore, earnestly ask for a resolution that will bring some relief to the bereaved family, other parents, students of Dowen College and the public. These should include a change of the school management and hostel teachers, installation of Closed Circuit Television cameras in all strategic places and overhauling of the school security system,” they added.
