Staff of Dowen College, a school in Lekki, Lagos where a boy Sylvester Oromoni died after allegedly being attacked by senior students for refusing to join a cult, have expressed their commitment to justice, posing with branded T-shirts of the late student.
In a statement on Wednesday, the management of the school said it began investigation into the case of bullying when it was reported by Oromoni’s family.
“It is true that though he went home on the 23rd of November, his family did call on the 29th to inform us that he said he was actually bullied by five senior students whose names he mentioned,” the statement read.
“We confirm that we immediately started internal investigations on the 30th but he passed on that same day.
“Sadly, we had barely made any headway before the social media frenzy commenced.”
The school also said it would ensure that it gets to the bottom of the allegations that have been made, while also maintaining that Oromoni had suffered a leg injury.
“We are distressed that a child sustained a leg injury, and passed on a week later. We are as shocked as the rest of the world to see our lovely boy look so ill and be in so much pain from the videos posted,” the school management said.
The school has been shut by the state government.
On Tuesday, Lagos police commissioner Hakeem Odumosu said five students and three house masters are currently in police custody for the alleged assault.
