I’ll run for president if…— Peter Obi

Former vice-presidential candidate Peter Obi says he will contest the 2023 presidential election if the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) zones the ticket to the southern region.

Several political parties in Nigeria have zoning as part of their strategies to ensure every region gets a taste of power.

Tweeting on Tuesday morning, Mr Obi cleared doubts about his intentions as the race for the 2023 presidency gears up.

“Yes, I will step into the field to contest for the opportunity to serve this great country as President if my party, the @OfficialPDPNig, zones the ticket to the south. But if it is thrown open, Nigerians will also hear from me,” the former Anambra State governor said.

Obi was the running mate of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in 2019. Unconfirmed reports say Atiku is considering picking Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike as his running mate this time.

Atiku’s ally Raymond Dokpesi met PDP leaders in the southeast in January to woo them to support his presidential ambition. Dokpesi said the former Vice President only wants a single tenure and promised to hand over to a south-easterner.

Other presidential hopefuls include Bola Tinubu; Dele Momodu; Bukola Saraki, Aminu Tambuwal, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Pius Anyim; David Umahi; Senator Rochas Okorocha; Senator Orji Kalu; and Kingsley Moghalu.
