Senator Rochas Okorocha (APC, Imo West) on Thursday met President Muhammadu Buhari at Aso Villa, Abuja to inform him of his presidential ambition and to ask the president to stop his prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The presidential hopeful told reporters after the meeting that there is an existing court order restraining the EFCC from prosecuting him, hence Buhari should call the anti-graft agency to order.
The EFCC had filed a 17-count fraud charge against Okorocha earlier this week at the Federal High Court, Abuja, shortly after the former governor declared his intention to contest the 2023 presidential election.
The EFCC alleges that Okorocha conspired with others mentioned to launder N2.4 billion state fund.
Okorocha, who wants the EFCC to release his international passport, said it was Buhari’s responsibility as president of Nigeria to ensure that justice is served on all citizens.
He also accused his successor in Imo, Governor Hope Uzodimma, of being behind security breaches in the state, saying that during his tenure as governor, he was able to manage the security situation effectively.
“Whatever security breaches you are seeing in Imo State, whether IPOB or general crimes should be blamed on the incumbent government because it is the failure of leadership,” he said.
