A student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, Osun State died on Wednesday after falling into a septic tank in a private hostel on the campus.
Ajibola Ayomikun was in her second year in the department of linguistics and African languages.
It was gathered that Ayomikun stepped on a plank used to cover a damaged concrete cover on a septic tank at Bver Hostel.
In a statement, the university’s spokesman Abiodun Olarewaju said firemen were mobilised to rescue her immediately the news got to the school authorities.
“When the news got to us, we immediately mobilised fire men from the University, Osun State and the OAU Teaching Hospital, who through concerted efforts, got the student out. She was immediately taken to the OAU Teaching Hospitals Complex where she was certified dead,” he said.
“The Vice Chancellor, Prof Eyitope Ogunbodede, who led his management team to the scene, sympathised with the students and commiserated with the parents of the deceased.”
