Police in Lagos have deployed personnel following rumour that members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) were planning protests at various locations in the state.
A message which has been shared multiple times on social media warns the public to be wary of a possible breakdown of law and order during the protests.
“We have information of an intending protest tomorrow by the National Road Transport Union, Lago Branch. Going by the past record of the union and its members, the protest could be very violent, especially around Ilupeju, Mushin, Mile 12, Ajah, and Lagos Island. Staff members are hereby advised to be on red alert and avoid there mentioned hot spots,” the message said.
Reacting to this, spokesman of the police in Lagos Adekunle Ajisebutu on Wednesday urged Lagosians to go about their daily activities without fear, saying the police had deployed patrol teams around the state.
“We cannot take chances. We have done massive deployment of police patrol teams to every nook and cranny including parks and garages in the state. There is no cause for alarm,” he told PUNCH.
The crisis in NURTW reached its peak last week when the chairman of the Lagos State council of the union Musiliu Akinsanya aka MC Oluomo was suspended indefinitely by the national body for alleged insubordination among other allegations.
MC Oluomo and the entire Lagos council subsequently announced they were pulling out of the national body, a move which forced Lagos State Government to suspend the activities of NURTW in the state.
