An imam in Abuja Sheikh Nuru Khalid has been sacked for not showing remorse over his criticism of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Chairman of the mosque committee at the Apo legislative quarters in Abuja, Senator Muhammadu Dansadau, confirmed the sack of the imam.
Khalid was suspended after his sermon on April 2 where he criticised Buhari over the attack on a train heading to Kaduna from Abuja.
A letter the mosque committee issued on Monday signed by Dansadau stated that a decision was taken to finally relieve him of his duty because he had not shown any remorse over the issue since his suspension.
“You can see why we cannot sit with him over the matter,” Dansadau told BBC Hausa in an interview.
“He cannot lead us in prayers. The religious tenet agrees if you cannot be led in prayers by someone, you can change the mosque where you worship. A mosque is a place of worship, not an arena to criticise the government.”
The sacked imam was, however, quoted as saying that he would rather carry loads for people and get paid than stop “telling the truth.”
