From Remedies to Plantashun Boiz, the Nigerian music scene has seen the birth and death of several music groups. The group currently making so much waves in the country is YBNL.
An acronym for Yahoo Boy No Laptop, YBNL is fronted by indigenous rapper, Olamide, to remind the youths that money can still be made in legitimate ways.
Below are seven reasons they are one of the best music groups in Nigeria.
1. They appeal to a wide variety of audience
Their fans range from all music backgrounds. From rap, to R&b, to Fuji, to Afro-pop, there’s no genre YBNL hasn’t touched.
2. Most of their tracks became hits
The last time we had a group where hits were released at this pace was during the era of Mo’ Hits from where D’banj, Wande Coal, Dr Sid, and a host of others burst into the scene.
3. Numbers don’t lie
In 2015, they dominated all award shows and events. Their domination was so huge that when YBNL artiste, Lil Kesh, didn’t pick up the award for the next rated artiste at the Headies, uneducated fans felt it was unfair and it became a huge topic.
4. They are creative and original
Whether it’s Olamide rapping in Yoruba, Adekunle Gold expressing himself, Viktoh singing in Esan or Lil Kesh speaking the language of the streets, you can clearly see they are having fun while doing what they love.
5. Versatility
From Olamide’s hit track ‘Melo Melo’ playing in an advert, to Adekunle Gold’s ‘Pick Up’ playing at a party or Lil Kesh hit track ‘Efejoku’ playing in a barbershop, their songs are played in all backgrounds.
6. Started from the bottom
All their artiste’s had to come up from the bottom. YBNL never signed an established artiste. They allowed each of them to showcase their music to the fans, and it all resulted in hit tracks.
7. They are still growing
They are still young, vibrant and have a lot to offer.
