Senate Chief Whip Orji Kalu on Wednesday called on Christians not to be bothered about the possibility of presidential candidate Bola Tinubu, a Muslim, picking another Muslim as running mate.
There have been concerns over the move to have two Muslims occupy the nation’s top two positions, with religious sentiments still a major part of Nigerian politics.
Addressing journalists at the National Assembly, Kalu said Tinubu’s wife Senator Oluremi Tinubu is a pastor and that should mean something to the electorate.
He said, “Do you want me to speak the truth, if I am in Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s situation. I will go Muslim-Muslim ticket. The most important thing is for the party to win. We should stop all this rubbish about whether you put a Christian, after all the wife is a pastor and she is already like a deputy president.”
Senator Tinubu is an ordained pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).
“Let me tell you,” Kalu added, “in my house, my wife is the head of the house in reality. Even you men that are here, now that your wives aren’t here, they are the head. Like if I wear this cloth, my wife will tell me ‘My dear, this cloth is not good to remove.'”
Tinubu is rumoured to be considering a number of persons, including former governor of Borno State Senator Kashim Shettima, a Muslim, as his running mate.
