Freestyle wrestler Odunayo Adekuoroye on Tuesday visited Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the Lagos House in Marina.
Adekuoroye won a gold medal in women’s 57kg freestyle wrestling at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United Kingdom, defeating her Indian opponent Anshu Malik 7-3 (VPO1) to secure Nigeria’s first gold medal in wrestling at the 2022 Games.
Sanwo-Olu’s chief press secretary, Gboyega Akosile, posted photos of the visit on Instagram. In one of the photos, Adekuoroye decorates Sanwo-Olu with the gold medal. The governor did likewise in another photo.
Mr Akosile said, “Miss Odunayo Adekuroye, a gold medalist at the Commonwealth Games (Birmingham 2022) and Silver medalist at the World wrestling Championships, paid a courtesy call on Governor Babajide Sanwo- Olu at the Lagos House, Marina.”
Sanwo-Olu also posted on Instagram photos of Adekuoroye’s visit. He said he was happy that young people like Adekuoroye are excelling in sports.
He said, “Today, I received Miss Odunayo Adekuroye, a gold medalist in Wrestling at the just concluded Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
“Odunayo and other medalists brought honour and glory to our country and I am particularly happy that young and gifted people like her are excelling in sports and other vocations. I am sure her success will motivate and inspire other young people.
“As a government we take sports development very seriously and it is for that reason we are providing sporting facilities in our schools and communities across Lagos State.”
Adekuoroye was accompanied to the governor’s office by the head coach of Nigeria female wrestling, Purity Akuh; and sports journalist and administrator, Godwin Enakhena.
Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat was also on ground to receive them.
Team Nigeria won a total of 35 medals at the Games with 12 gold, nine silver and 14 bronze medals, mostly won by women.
