Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the death of four students of Kuramo Senior College, Lekki at Elegushi beach.
The boys, according to the management of the beach, were among 10 aged between 14 and 15, who visited the beach on Tuesday to celebrate their successes in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
In a statement on behalf of the management, Ayuba Elegushi said the Kuramo College students were initially denied access to the beach but they took a detour and went to an unmanned section of the beach to swim.
Elegushi said all of them were almost drowning before the beach security were alerted to the scene and six of them were rescued while four were unaccounted for.
Confirming their death, Lagos police spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin tweeted on Tuesday night that parents should advise their teenagers against swimming without supervision.
“I’ve talked about drowning in relation to water travel and swimming pool. Still, parents/guardians, have a heart-to-heart talk with your teenagers to avoid losing them.
“Four teenagers drowned at a Lagos beach today, after collecting their exam results in school,” Hundeyin wrote.
