Tukur Mamu, spokesman of the Kaduna-based cleric Ahmad Gumi, has been arrested in Egypt.
Mamu told Premium Times on Wednesday that he was arrested on Tuesday and detained by Interpol at the Cairo International Airport while awaiting a connecting flight to Saudi Arabia.
The publisher of Desert Herald Newspaper in Kaduna said he was interrogated before being flown back to Nigeria by Interpol, adding that nothing incriminating was found against him.
He was accompanied by his two wives and one other person.
Gumi’s spokesman is expected to arrive at Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano later on Wednesday and may be interrogated further by officials of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Mamu negotiated the release of some of the victims of the March 2022 Kaduna-Abuja train attack. He withdrew as lead negotiator following allegation that the Nigerian government was threatening his life.
