The World Athletics has ratified the women’s world 100m hurdles record set by Nigerian athlete Tobi Amusan at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, United States.
Amusan ran the 100m hurdles in an astonishing 12.12 seconds.
The 25-year-old is now officially confirmed as the first Nigerian athlete to hold a world record.
Another world record ratified by World Athletics include 9.94 seconds which Botswanan sprinter Letsile Tebogo ran in men’s 100m at the World Championships in Eugene.
His 9.91 second run at the 100 metres final during the 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships in Cali, Colombia was yet to be ratified as of press time.
Also ratified was Sweden’s Mondo Duplantis’ men’s world pole vault record of 6.21m among others.
Amusan grabbed the world’s attention again in the finals of the World Championships in Oregon when she clocked an incredible 12.06 seconds.
However, her winning time was not recognised as a world record due to an illegal tailwind of 2.5 metres per second.
Oregon 2022 was Amusan’s third appearance at the World Championships after making her debut in London in 2017 where she made the semi-finals before finishing fourth in the final in Doha in 2019. She also placed fourth at the Tokyo Olympics.
Amusan had broken the African record three times in only 10 months.
The Ijebu-Ode-born star has gone on to set other records in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, UK, before capping an amazing season with a Diamond League win in Zurich, Switzerland.
Amusan plans to run the 100m hurdles in less than 12 seconds.
She and a host of other athletes who represented Nigeria at the World Championships in Oregon and Commonwealth Games were received by President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja on September 15.
