Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has stirred debates on social media after offering his seat to presidential candidate Peter Obi at an event to celebrate a national award given to the president of the African Export-Import Bank Prof. Benedict Oramah.
In a viral video, Obasanjo calls up Obi, who was sitting at table nine, and leads him to table one.
“In the presence of Nigerians,” Obasanjo said as he he stepped forward to pick the former Anambra State governor from his former seat.
Obasanjo declared after successfully bringing Obi to table one, “My job is done”.
The move was applauded by the audience.
Social media users have described it as a symbolic act of endorsement.
Though Obasanjo has not formally endorsed any presidential candidate for the February 2023 election, he is rumoured to be favouring Obi.
The Labour Party candidate has had a series of closed-door meetings with the former President.
Obasanjo was also part of Obi’s recent London meeting with Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and his group who are in the centre of the crisis in the PDP.
Obi has been favoured by some polls ahead of other major contenders like Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP.
