Traders at Alaba International Market in the Ojo area of Lagos clashed with hoodlums on Wednesday, raising tension in the area.
The traders, it was gathered, accused the hoodlums said to be members of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) of extortion.
Videos emanating from the market show some traders, all men, carrying sticks and cutlasses and chanting songs.
However, Lagos police spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin tweeted that normalcy has returned to the market which is arguably Africa’s biggest electronics market.
“Alaba International Market is calm. Normalcy has been restored. @rrslagos767 and men of Ojo Division are on ground, under the supervision of Area Commander Festac, ACP Igbafe Afegbai,” Hundeyin wrote.
“There is no cause for alarm as monitoring continues,” he added.
