Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) Omoyele Sowore threw a jibe at Senator Dino Melaye at an event held on Saturday over the latter’s cash donation.

The event was the night of tribute held in honour of rights activist, Ariyo Dare-Atoye, in Abuja.

Melaye, who eulogised the late Dare-Atoye, donated N500,000 to a foundation set up for the deceased’s children.

The former legislator, who is also a spokesman for the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential campaign council, recalled how selfless the deceased was during his lifetime.

“Severally, he was in my house, and he never came for himself. He always asked me to assist others, he never asked me of anything,” Melaye said.

“I spoke to my brothers, Deji and Tosin, and they told me about a planned education foundation for the children. I’m pledging an annual donation of N500,000 to the foundation, and I brought the first part of it.”

Speaking afterwards at the event, Sowore attributed Melaye’s cash donation to the Central Bank of Nigeria’s plan on redesigning some naira notes.

Sowore said: “You can already see the effect of CBN redesigning of naira notes, politicians are now carrying cash in the day time.”

The redesigned naira notes will be rolled out as from December 15, 2022, according to the apex bank.

Naira denominations that would be redesigned include N200, N500, and N1000 notes.
