Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) Peter Obi says Nigeria needs a better driver in 2023.
Mr. Obi, who likened the country to a vehicle with knocked engine caused by the recklessness and quackery of its past drivers, said this at a campaign rally at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan on Wednesday.
The former Anambra State governor added that a new Nigeria is possible if entrusted in the hands of trained, confident and fully qualified drivers like himself and his running mate Datti Baba-Ahmed.
Obi, who was introduced at the rally by the director-general of his campaign Dr. Doyin Okupe, started his speech by paying tributes to late former premiers of the old Western Region Obafemi Awolowo and Ladoke Akintola.
He also paid tributes to the current Yoruba leaders, especially Afenifere chief Ayo Adebanjo who was physically present at the rally.
Obi said that by standing on the side of equity and justice, Afenifere has stood out as one of the custodians of the conscience of the nation. He argued that justice, equity and fairness remained the only durable foundation for the future of a prosperous Nigeria.
He decried the use of tribe, religion and ethnicity as an instrument of division and vowed that he and his running mate would ignore those distractions and use their experience as wealth creators to expand the national cake for everybody to equitably enjoy.
Earlier in his speech, Adebanjo said he was determined to attend the rally because of his desire to see the birth of an equitable, strong and fair Nigeria, which he said the Obi/Datti presidential ticket represents.
In her vote of thanks, Margaret Peter-Obi urged Nigerians to show sustained commitment to the movement for renewal by collecting their voter’s card.
